Libya’s volatile political and security situation has rendered research in and on this country particularly challenging. At the same time, the issues at stake in Libya are crucial for the whole region and especially its Mediterranean neighbourhood, requiring thorough knowledge of the local dynamics and ongoing transformations.

The research track of the Libya Platform precisely aims to offer a better understanding of the Libyan developments by producing high-quality research that can inform academics, policymakers and practitioners in Libya, MENA countries, Europe and beyond. The research outputs are based on fieldwork findings and produced in collaboration with Libya-based experts and researchers, some of them trained through the Mentorship program. The research component also relies on a close partnership with the Peace Makers Libya team, which possesses an in-depth knowledge of the country’s conflict dynamics and years-long experience in local mediation. In-house experts and commissioned researchers also benefit from our large network of contacts on the ground to gather first-hand information, discuss with Libyan stakeholders from a diversity of backgrounds and develop thorough and insightful analyses. All our publications are disseminated in both Arabic and English.

The project also seeks to trigger debate on key policy issues and options relevant to the Libyan political process in the mid- and long terms by organizing workshops and dialogue sessions involving figures from Libya’s political parties and institutions, youth leaders, civil society actors and Libyan and international experts. It also supports the work of international organizations working in and on Libya through regular collaboration and exchanges of views. Our current thematic focuses include Libya’s political process (constitution, elections, political parties), the future of the economy and economic reforms, public policies, and national reconciliation.

The research activities and publications are aimed at Libyan and international decision-makers, practitioners, researchers, and any expert audience having an interest in Libya’s current and future developments.
