Prof. Narbone was interviewed by ItaliaOggi

On 23 May, Prof. Narbone was interviewed by ItaliaOggi regarding the announced recognition of the Palestinian State by Spain, Ireland and Norway and the European stance on the Gaza War and the future of the Two States solution.

Prof. Narbone remarked that the decision by the three European countries is in line with their criticism of the way Israel has conducted the war and reflects their historical support for the peace process and the Palestinian cause. But the move is also intended to provide a fresh push to the search of a political solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Until now, the EU stance has been limited to a ritual call for the parties to resume negotiations. This approach has consistently proven ineffective, also in light of Israel rejection of a Palestinian state and of the changed situation on the ground. The decisions by these three countries, according to Prof. Narbone, will deepen the divisions between the European Union member States, but has also the potential of prompting a reassessment of the European strategy towards the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Regarding Israel’s internal situation, Netanyahu remains steadfast in his policies, showing no signs of moderating his maximalist and security-focused approach. Prof. Narbone suggests that this strategy could further isolate Israel on the global stage and inadvertently benefit Hamas.

While the Israeli establishment and public largely support Netanyahu’s stance, there is growing dissatisfaction with his leadership, and many calls for change which might lead to an end of his long political career. A change in the country’s leadership might be a first step in a new direction.

The interview is available in Italian.
