Prof. Luigi Narbone revisited the key moments leading to the fall of the Assad regime
“It will be important to avoid in Syria the mistakes made in Iraq and Libya.”
On 12 december 2024, during a detailed interview with ItaliaOggi, our Director, Prof. Luigi Narbone, revisited the key moments leading to the fall of the Assad regime, providing an analysis of the main actors involved in recent weeks: the rebel forces led by HTS, as well as the roles of Russia, Iran, Turkey, and Western countries.
Prof. Narbone depicted the catastrophic situation in which Assad’s dictatorship found itself. Despite appearing victorious after a decade-long civil war, the underlying causes of the regime’s collapse can be traced to severe economic isolation and deep-seated corruption that was rotting the system from within.
In the interview, Prof. Narbone also examined the interests and roles of the major regional and global powers, all eager to secure a share of influence in Syria’s future.
